There’s something special about standing at the edge of the Pacific Ocean with towering cliffs beneath your feet, salt air in your lungs, and miles of rugged coastline stretching endlessly into the distance. That’s exactly how this journey began.
For the first hike in my 30 Hikes in 30 Days challenge, we headed to Cape Lookout State Park on the Oregon Coast — and honestly, I couldn’t have imagined a better place to start.
The Magic of the Oregon Coast
One of the things I love most about the Oregon Coast is how alive it feels. The weather changes by the minute. One moment the sky is dark and moody, with fog drifting through the trees, and the next the sun breaks through the clouds and lights up the entire coastline.
That constant shift creates an atmosphere that feels almost cinematic, and I often find myself frantically digging my camera back out of my bag to capture a photo just when I thought I was done.
Cape Lookout perfectly captures that magic. The trail begins beneath a canopy of towering trees draped in moss, winding through a lush temperate rainforest that feels ancient and untouched. Everything is green. Ferns cover the forest floor, moss hangs from the branches, and the cool ocean air follows you every step of the way.
As the hike continues, the landscape slowly transforms. The dense forest opens up to dramatic cliffs battered by coastal winds, revealing sweeping panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.
And suddenly, you’re no longer just hiking through the forest.
You’re standing at the edge of a continent.
A Trail Filled With History
Along the trail, we stopped briefly at the memorial site of a World War II plane crash — a quiet and sobering reminder of the history hidden within these landscapes.
Moments like that always make hiking feel like more than just exercise. Trails hold stories. Some are beautiful, some tragic, and some almost forgotten over time. Taking a moment to acknowledge that history added another layer of meaning to the experience.
Discovering the Small Details
One of my favorite parts of hiking is noticing the little things most people walk past.
During the hike, we came across Coral Bells — a beautiful plant with delicate heart-shaped leaves that has historically been used for medicinal purposes. It’s easy to get caught up chasing viewpoints and overlooks, but the Pacific Northwest has so much beauty hidden in the details too.
That balance is something I hope this challenge helps me appreciate more over the next 30 days.
Reaching Cape Lookout
The trail itself is about 5 miles round trip and considered moderate, but the payoff is incredible.
Cape Lookout stretches nearly two miles into the Pacific Ocean, creating the feeling of having a front-row seat to the raw power of the Oregon Coast. Standing at the tip of the cape, surrounded by crashing waves and endless ocean in every direction, felt both peaceful and humbling at the same time.
The wind was intense. The cliffs were dramatic. And the views were unforgettable.
It was the perfect reminder of why I wanted to start this challenge in the first place.
The Beginning of Something Bigger
This hike wasn’t just about checking off Day 1.
It was about slowing down. Getting outside. Reconnecting with nature. Challenging myself creatively and physically. And documenting the beauty that exists all throughout the Pacific Northwest.
If this first hike is any indication of what’s ahead, these next 30 days are going to be unforgettable.
And honestly?
There’s no better place to begin than the Oregon Coast.
