Sometimes the places that change your life aren’t part of the original plan.
Years ago, my husband and I planned a trip to explore Portland and Washington. The Oregon Coast was supposed to be nothing more than a quick add-on stop — a scenic detour before continuing the rest of our trip.
At the time, we had no idea that one trail would completely change the course of our lives.
That trail was Indian Beach Trail.
First Impressions of the Oregon Coast
I still remember the drive into Ecola State Park.
The towering Sitka spruce trees. The fog hanging in the forest. The salty air drifting through the open windows. Everything felt different from anywhere we had ever been before.
Coming from somewhere flatter, hotter, and busier, the Pacific Northwest almost didn’t feel real. It felt untouched. Wild. Moody in the best possible way.
The Trail That Felt Like Another World
The Indian Beach Trail winds through dense coastal forest before opening up to dramatic views of the Pacific Ocean. At every turn, it felt like we had stepped deeper into another world.
Massive moss-covered trees surrounded us. Ferns blanketed the ground. The sound of crashing waves echoed through the forest long before we could actually see the ocean.
When we finally reached the coastline, it completely stopped us in our tracks.
The cliffs stretched endlessly along the shore. Sea stacks rose out of the water like something from a movie. Waves crashed against the rocks below while mist rolled through the trees behind us.It wasn’t just beautiful. It felt like home.
The Moment Everything Changed
There wasn’t one dramatic conversation where we decided to move to Oregon. It happened quietly.
Somewhere between standing on those cliffs, breathing in the ocean air, and hiking through those forests, we both realized something felt different here. Peaceful. Familiar. Like the version of life we had always been looking for but didn’t know existed.
The Oregon Coast has a way of slowing you down. Life feels less rushed here. The weather forces you to embrace the moment instead of trying to control it. Sunny skies are beautiful, but the foggy mornings and stormy afternoons somehow feel even more magical. And after that trip, we couldn’t stop thinking about it.
From Vacation Destination to Home
What started as a quick stop on a larger trip slowly became the place we wanted to build our lives around. So we sold our home in Florida and drove back to Oregon. bNow, years later, we get to call the Oregon Coast home — and it still feels surreal sometimes.
Why This Place Still Inspires Me
Even now, after countless hikes and beach walks, trails like Indian Beach still give me that same feeling they did the very first time. That sense of wonder hasn’t faded. If anything, it’s grown stronger.
Living here has taught me to appreciate slower mornings, changing weather, quiet forests, and the healing power of simply being outside. It’s inspired my love for hiking, storytelling, photography, and creating videos that hopefully encourage other people to get outside too.
It’s funny to think that none of this was part of the original plan. We almost skipped the coast entirely. But sometimes the best parts of life begin with an unexpected detour.
